| What is Contact Improvisation? | |
|
Contact Improvisation is
a 35 year-old movement form that investigates the possibilities of
bodies moving together in kinesthetic connection. Sometimes wild and
athletic, sometimes quiet and meditative, it is a form open to all
bodies and enquiring minds. Contact improvisation is a dance form in which the point of contact with another dancer provides the starting point for a movement exploration. It is most frequently performed as a duet, but can be danced by more people. The emphasis is on the flow of energy and on an awareness of one's own body and on that of one's partner rather than on producing lines and shapes. Contact improvisation invites creative thinking and spontaneity as well as technical ability. The class and jam will be a playful and exhilarating event for people of all levels of dance experience. What happens in a jam? A jam is an informal gathering of dancers. There is no teacher, but space and time to develop skills and confidence. You are free to dance, rest or sit and watch as you wish. The jam provides an opportunity to explore and integrate newly learnt techniques and to find your own routes into dancing. Live musicians will improvise with the dancing at some jams. |
